Rioja on the Brain

Lately I’ve been drinking quite a bit of Rioja Reserva in particular. Don’t get me wrong…..I’m still collecting the Gran Reservas, but they’re far too special to consume weekly. With Reservas, I often times get wines that are nearly as delicious as Gran Reservas, but are somewhat younger, and much more affordable. Even Lance has been raving about these wines, and has collected a few beauties for himself as of late. With so many good ones available right now, from a string of rockin’ vintages, I’ve decided that I’d like to have a blind Reserva challenge at home, featuring wines from 2001 and older. I will be inviting a few of my geeky friends to get involved and bring their own undisclosed Reservas, and I’d like to know if anyone has some suggestions about producers that shouldn’t be excluded. Deborah and I will be offering up the following wines that day from our collection, and we’d love to know what we’re missing…..

2001 Rondan Reserva
2001 Lopez de Heredia Viña Bosconia Reserva
2001 Marques de Riscal Reserva
1999 Martinez Lacuestra Campeador Reserva
1999 Conde de Jauregui Reserva
1998 Marques de Murrieta Ygay Reserva
Plus one ringer

I want this blind tasting to be exciting, and price is no issue. The best feedback will be rewarded. -Michael Koehler

OMG, DROOL....can I be your new best friend, please?!? LOL. Sounds great. I'd perhaps add the Cune that I mentioned on Twitter.

Yes. Cune is a classic, and I will make sure someone acquires a bottle. Another responder mentioned Vina Ardanza from La Rioja could I forget? I'll be sure to send you the tasting notes. -MK
